BEDDING MISCONCEPTIONS
COMMON BEDDING MISCONCEPTIONS & DECEPTIONS TO BE AWARE OFEgyptian Cotton
Let’s talk first about the abuse and misuse of the term “Egyptian Cotton.” This term literally refers to cotton that is grown on the Nile Delta in Egypt. It is an expensive cotton to grow, harvest and ship around the world. As we have said the reason it is so desirable is that it is a natural, long staple cotton that produces superior yarn for sheeting. It is sold on the open commodities market for whatever the “fair market price” is, on each successive day, to the better linen mills around the world. The price rises like all other commodities based on market demand. You have probably seen the term “Egyptian Cotton” used on products that truly have no association with raw material from the country of Egypt at all. If you see “Egyptian Cotton” on sheet sets at a mass merchant, box store or department store at a so called “bargain price” you can bet that it is not the real thing. In bedding it is true you simply “get what you pay for!” Real “Egyptian Cotton” as a raw material is quite expensive and definitely worth the price due to it’s superior benefits in terms of comfort, strength and durability. There are no shortcuts in material or construction features when it comes to producing beautiful high quality linens that you will enjoy for years to come.Thread Count
One of the biggest misconceptions in our mind is the misused concept of “thread counts,” (TC.) Customers are lead to believe that bigger numbers must be better, “but that isn't necessarily true!” The term thread count is supposed to mean the number of actual pieces of yarn, that is, threads in the warp (lengthwise) and weft (widthwise) of the fabric, per square inch. It was meant to be a standard by which you could compare the density of sheeting materials from one cloth sample to another. There are two problems here, some companies focus on how high they can state that number and never really talk about the quality of the actual cotton yarn itself. They may use an inferior yarn made of coarse short staple cotton and produce it in a higher thread count, but this will not make a comfortable more durable sheet package than for example, a lower thread count of higher quality yarn such as that which is made from “Egyptian Cotton.” The quality of the yarn is the single most important factor in determining the quality and comfort of any sheet set, not the thread count. In addition, the whole concept of thread count is often manipulated to give the customer the perception of greater density and higher quality in a coarser lower quality material. Here’s how it’s done… some of the lower end mills are wrapping a second or third ply of short staple fibers around a single strand and claiming two or three times the thread count. An actual 200 TC of cheaper, lesser quality yarn with an extra wrap becomes a 400TC, a third wrap then becomes a 600 TC. They simply don’t mention that little detail on their packaging because as of right now, they aren’t required to by law. Hopefully our government’s consumer protection regulations will catch up eventually and you will be able to know the truth about the “thread count deception.” None of our quality sheet sets are multi-ply yarns, they are all high quality single ply sheet sets. Multi-ply may sound better but it is actually inferior to single ply sheeting materials.
Bottom Line
The bottom line is these low end mills will never be able to produce a superior sheet by adding more inferior yarn to it, they can never add more comfort and durability by adding more coarse, short staple cotton. We do not sell products that inflate the thread count in order to deceive our customers. Our single ply 200, 300, 350 and above, are of an actual thread per inch count with no multi- ply yarn (wrapped). These true thread count sheet sets in genuine Egyptian and Pima Cotton will outperform those multi-ply 400, 600 and 1000 TC sheets of inferior multi- ply yarn in every way. One other fact is that those wrapped plys will eventually end up in your washing machines lint trap because they are only wrapped around the woven yarns. Beware of “multi-ply” sheets with bogus high thread counts. With all the hype over Thread Count, and the resulting confusion, we want to educate you, our customers, as to the important quality differences between single-ply sheets and multi-ply sheets and to be sure that you know we specialize in selling high quality single ply sheet sets.As you can see the cheapest sheet sets may be initially less expensive because they are constructed of lower quality, short staple, cotton materials that will not be as comfortable or as durable as the premium cotton materials in our better bedding sets. When you invest in a top quality 100% cotton sheet material such as the Egyptian long staple cotton that we use in our premium sets, you will be getting the unsurpassed comfort of Egyptian cotton and a longer lasting set of sheets. This means you get more enjoyment and a lower ultimate “cost” factor because of how long the better quality sheets will last.
Remember in our store’s selection of bedding you really do get what you pay for and you certainly don’t pay too much! We are selling quality boutique bedding sets at better than department and box store prices. As you shop our competitors you will see good quality products that simply cost too much and likewise lower price product that costs too much for the quality. The reason we give such tremendous value is that our buyers have been involved in the production process from selecting the quality of material right through the design and distribution phase and as always, we buy quantity and we pay cash for our inventory so there are no added costs to pass on to you, our customers. We deliver the discounts and savings directly to our customers in the form of better quality and better prices, and that’s what we call value.
